Still a "candidate" driven market? Take a look at some facts!

In a recent UK survey the CIPD (Chartered Instutute of Personnel & Development) confirmed that 86% of companies are concerned about their ability to meet their organisations recruitment needs. What makes even more interesting reading is that over 80% of companies feel that staff retention is a growing concern and needs to be addressed.

So there we have it, the business world still hasn't found the magic formula to attract talent, and… Continue

Think Like A Candidate

The primary reason quite frankly I got into recruiting is that my experience with most recruiters while I was an employee doing marketing and business development (for 18 years) stunk. Really, getting a cold call from someone who wastes your time and doesn't have a clue what the difference between someone doing Business Development and Sales was pathetic.

So, my suggestion is to always put yourself in the candidates shoes. Be prepared. Don't waste their time. I think a lot of being a… Continue

Useful Resource or "W_o_T"

Good feedback!

I was introduced to a service last week:Go here or http://tinyurl.com/joboards

Without completely throwing my services under the bus, I want to say that I think might be a good "Take it with a grain of Salt" or " You get what you pay for" type of service.

I value my time and the time I leverage through trading partners/split recruiters. More often than not, I would say that the time we spend (not just quantity, but quality)… Continue

Made anybody's day lately?

I got an email today that "made my day."

Yeah, I know, it's not all about me, but I really dig it when somebody takes the time to send a nice email, note, thank you card, whatev. It shows there's still a few good souls out there in the world who perceive the value of:

- passing on a kind word

- encouraging a stranger in their endeavors

- appreciating the efforts of others and taking action to tell them.

I got one of those today. Jeremiah Reyes took 2… Continue

Extensive Training - a must

I learned that in the executive recruitment industry the more you train the better you get at sourcing , selecting and just at understanding who makes a good lead and who does not.

Antal International Network is a company that provides all the necessary training from audio materials, to video, and power point presentations and especially live training with a professional trainer Helene Buchanan-Dunne:

* President at Buchanan-Dunne Associates

Love is the Killer App

I'm in the middle of reading a book by Tim Sanders called, Love is the Killer App (how to win business and influence friends).

It's been out since 2002 - I actually picked it up at Half Price Books (which tells you a little about my personality). But here's the best part, it's autographed by Sanders on the front page… Continue

Observation: Does A Candidate's 'Short-Name' Tell Us Anything?

I understand this may be an unusual post, so bear with me for a moment. I've recruited a great deal of 'Elizabeth'-named candidates. Most reply with 'Liz' after establishing some dialogue and a relationship. You know what I mean -- after a couple conversations, people let down the whole-name barrier and let the gate down slightly. For example, my friends call me Josh, but my whole name is Joshua (which is what I use on my email signature.)

However, today, I had a candidate reply back… Continue

Rudyard Kipling's "If" - Thought I'd Pass On As A Reflection of a Headhunter's Life

A friend of mine passed this on the other day, and although I don't have much use for poets personally, this isn't bad. It reminds me of the life a true Headhunter (an entrepreneurial one) lives as you walk in many different circles:

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you

But make allowance for their doubting too,

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or… Continue

The Truth about Interview Travel Expenses

The force of globalization and increased movement of workers, coupled with the general lowering of travel costs would indicate a willingness of companies to incur in travel expenses to invite a candidate for an interview, when they are unable to fill a position locally and out-of-state or foreign applicants have the required skills, such as experience in a specific industry or company.

However, reality is different.

Most often than not, companies remain silent on the issue… Continue

Free Webinar: How to Use Facebook for Recruiting

Facebook and MySpace are two of the most popular sites amongst U.S. college students and recent graduates and dwarf the traffic from any job board, including sites such as Monster, Careerbuilder, and HotJobs. Yet very few employers are using the social networking sites for recruiting and very few of those are using them well.

I regularly speak at recruiting conferences and am quoted by national print and… Continue

Candidates Want to Know

It´s time we face it.

Candidates do not like to apply to postitions when companies advertise vacancies in a vacuum.

Often, companies do not state the name of the company or the salary range for the vacancies they advertise. Insted, they use words such as "Multinational Telecom Company", or "Magic Circle Law Firm" and are silent or vague when it comes to salary. This is often rooted in that companies, or their human resources consultants, want to attract the best candidates… Continue

Tech: A girl´s Best Friend

Women have been struggling for decades to achieve equal status to men when it comes to the workplace. The statistics are way too familiar. In the US, for full-time, year-round workers, women earn around 33% less than men for the same job. For women of color, the gap is even wider.

Women are also more likely to work in more precarious forms of employment with low earnings, little financial security and few or no social benefits. This results in that women also tend to own fewer… Continue
