Boy that really is a tough question. I have had actually three professions in my life, since i was 18. The first was the military, I spent 10 years with 4 of them being an Army Recruiter. I loved recruiting and much of what i did then is the same as i do now. Of course i only worked one side of the equation. Candidate with a bad background?
It might be a good idea to pause and give the person a moment to respond, if he wishes to do so.
If the person says that the record you received is in error, you should give him the chance to prove that to be the case giving him a definite deadline to produce documentation that proves his contention.
