Embarrassment To The Profession

Yesterday was a sad day for the baseball profession. 13 major league professionals were handed suspensions for steroid use. I think a better use of words rather than sad, would be embarrassing.  This is not the first time we have seen this happen and it certainly won't be the last.  The names are astounding.  Alex Rodriguez, Nelson Cruz, Jhonny Peralta were the 3 biggest…

The UK recruitment market is growing. Fast!

I have spent a lot of time involved in the UK recruitment market. I have lived there, worked there, and owned and run recruitment businesses there, until very recently. For the past decade I have visited London at least twice a year, often more. So I speak from personal experience when I say there has not been much positive to report from the UK, recruitment-wise, since about 2008.

However, over the past 2 weeks I got a very pleasant surprise. I was in London to speak to four groups…

Your LinkedIn Network -- A Cornerstone of The Candidate's Job Search?

Here's a question from a PhD looking for a position in the Medical Device industry.  He had spent the last several years with university start ups and was seeking to make the jump to an established Medtech company.

His inquiry was whether inviting industry recruiters to join his LinkedIn network would help his job search.  I can count on hearing a form of that question at least weekly.  What he was really asking was "Does a recruiter find jobs for people?"  Of course my answer is an…

Should You Pass Up a Candidate Just Because of His/Her Online Reputation?

Everything we do online matters. This has always been true, but it's never been as important as it is now. What makes this feel almost patently unfair is that, in spite of our actions mattering more now, we actually have less control over how we are perceived online. Thanks to social media, and a few other factors (not the least among them being Internet trolls), people can say just about anything they want about us online.

What are they saying about you today?…

The jobs market has been turbulent, to say the least, over the past few years, however, last month statistics were released stating the number of people claiming…

Practically every single company I’ve ever seen cited by all the social media/employer branding experts as a model in recruitment excellence have been a massive multinational with an almost omnipresent consumer brand.

Recently I received a resume from a young lady that had just graduated with a master’s degree in Oceanography looking for a position.  She sent this to me in hopes that she would be chosen to work for the company I had a contract with.  She like so many hopefuls she applied on line and waited to hear if she was chosen or not.  She was.  She had the schooling and…

Evil Confused Part 3

One week from today, Suzie started her fit.

Frank told Suzie to do her job, and not rely on gossip as a source for references.

Like the Tasmanian devil on Saturday morning, Suzie started to spin. Her thin skin couldn't take it. She was the HR person!  This was her domain! How dare Frank tell her what to do!

Using her power, she behaved badly. Her target was Frank. Her reach was far greater. She spun and spun and spun until she drew attention to herself. Frank looks like…
